The Islamic Practice of Remembrance

DAYA LAYLA

About this book

"To remember is to come back."

Think of your day yesterday. Waking up, the commute, the messages, the line, dinner, bed. How many times, in all that, did the name of Allah come to you?

Maybe not once. And yet you know Allah is there. The day simply goes by, and it does not come to you.

That is not a flaw. It is how we are made: what we do not say out loud ends up fading, even what we know best.

Dhikr is the answer the Islamic tradition has given to this for fourteen centuries. Repeating it with the tongue. Listening to it with the heart. Keeping it through the day.

A book to read, and to write in

Dhikr runs through the centuries. Ibn Manẓūr traces its root, al-Ghazālī devoted an entire book of his major work to it nine centuries ago, and Ibn Taymiyya and Ibn al-Qayyim set out four states of remembrance — including the one where the tongue speaks without the heart following, which still counts. What Daya Layla brings is a way to hold it for forty days in a row, one page at a time.

Each verse was reopened on its source and copied word for word, in the Saheeh International translation issued by Noor International Center and published on QuranEnc.com. The hadiths come from sunnah.com, with their reference and their grade.

The forty-day cycle

A few minutes a day. One phrase, chosen in the evening, and three things to do with it: write it, listen to what it stirs, place one moment of the day when it would have helped. One Name: Allah. Nothing more.

Eight stations run through the forty days — forgetting, without thinking about it, the moments, the tongue alone, in the noise, flat days, being remembered, what lasts.

No printed dates: the journal starts the day you open it, and can pause without putting you behind.

A copy that becomes yours

Once filled in, this journal looks like no other — it is your handwriting, your forty days, your phrases.

You will not learn to stop forgetting. You will learn the way back.

168 pages. Fifth and final title in the 40 DAYS collection.
